Janie was raised by her grandma, and her grandma lived with white people. Since Janie was surrounded by white kids she also thought she was white, until they took a picture of her with the white kids and she realized that she was not white, but black. The adversity that Janie as a child had to face is quite strong because her parents left her, and now she realizes that shes not the same color as her friends. I can't even imagine how it must have felt for her to realize that the little girl she was pointing to was her, especially when she was the only dark skinned in the picture.
